Autism
is a medical condition affecting children that disrupts in various degrees, the
ability to mentally develop and carry out expected roles as members of a
society. Autism tends to be associated with other conditions in some of the
affected children and adults afflicted with this condition. Much of the
narrated affected community members are within developed countries but this
problem is also currently seen in Tanzania and is fast growing in terms of
numbers of community members affected. Our experience as parents to children
with autism in Tanzania has shown that together with the associated
difficulties of taking care of an autistic child, the society that we live in
do not understand autism or most of the related mental conditions such as
epilepsy, mental retardation or psychosis. The community explanation is then
be-witchment or possession by evil spirits.
MISSION;
“To provide mental health services
to the members of the community affected by autism and other mental health
conditions and minimize cultural barriers and isolation of the affected
children/adults suffering from the conditions”
VISION;
“To have a society free from
segregation of mentally affected children and adults that enable them to access
all societal human rights and services as other community members”
